Modern Flower of the Month Descriptions

January 

Carnations, often thought of as the “flower of love” or “flower of the gods,” have been bred to bloom in several colors including pale pink, peach, red, yellow, white, and purple.

February 

Violets are associated with modesty and faithfulness and have been bred to bloom in white and shades of blue, purple, yellow, and pink.

March 

Jonquils indicate friendship, affection returned, and domestic happiness. Jonquils primarily occur in shades of yellow but some varieties have been bred to occur in shades of pink.

April

Sweet Peas are associated with pleasure, departure, and appreciation of a good time. Sweet peas have been bred to occur in white and shades of pink, blue, purple, red, and yellow.

May

Lily of the Valley has been used to convey happiness, humility, sweetness, and purity of heart. Lily of the Valley has also been used to tell a loved one “you complete my life.” Common colors are white and pink.

June

Roses can stand for love, beauty, respect and courage.  The color and arrangement of roses can give added meanings. Roses have been bred to include blooms of white or multiple shades of yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple.

July 

Larkspur is used to represent ardent attachment, first love, or fickleness. Larkspur is seen in white and shades of pink, purple, and blue.

August 

Gladiolus symbolize strength and moral integrity or infatuation. Gladiolus can be found in white or varying shades of red, orange, yellow, blue, and pink.

September

Asters were considered to be enchanted in ancient times. Today asters are a symbol of patience and an object of love. Asters usually have yellow centers and bloom in white or shades of red, pink, purple and blue.

October

Calendula means “through the months” and is commonly called marigold. Given as a gift the flower conveys the meaning winning grace. Calendula blooms in shades of yellow and orange.

November 

Chrysanthemums (Mums) are used to convey feelings of cheerfulness, optimism, truth, and rest. Specific colors can add additional meaning. Mums are seen in white or shades of yellow, purple, orange, pink, and red.

December 

Narcissus comes from the Greek word for numbness and is used to indicate self esteem or vanity. Narcissus are usually seen in white or pale shades of yellow, pink, and orange..
